Garmisch-Classic and the Wank: the trip most Zugspitze visitors never take.
The Zugspitze isn't the only mountain around Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The Garmisch-Classic area — Alpspitze, Kreuzeck, and Hausberg — carries 40 km of ski runs including the World Cup Kandahar course, while the separate Wank massif on the opposite side of the valley offers some of the easiest cable-car-assisted hiking in the region. Both are worth a full day on their own, and neither requires the Zugspitze ticket at all.
Garmisch-Classic: a real World Cup ski area
Garmisch-Classic spans the Alpspitze, Kreuzeck, and Hausberg mountains, with around 40 km of marked runs between 700 m and 2,050 m — a genuinely varied area with four valley runs and a dedicated children's zone alongside its serious terrain. The Kandahar, descending from the Kreuzjoch, is the area's signature run and hosts FIS Alpine World Cup and World Championship speed events; its Kandahar 2 variant runs 3.33 km with a 920 m vertical drop, a serious descent by any measure. This is a completely separate lift system and ticket from the Zugspitze's own ski area up on the Zugspitzplatt glacier plateau — the two aren't interchangeable, so pick based on which terrain you actually want.
The Wank: easy trails with a serious view
On the opposite side of the valley from the Zugspitze massif, the Wank is reached by its own cable car (the Wankbahn) and offers wide, gentle trails that suit first-time hikers, families, and anyone recovering from a harder day elsewhere — a deliberate contrast to the Reintal's high-alpine terrain. The payoff is a genuinely wide panorama back across the valley toward the Zugspitze and the Wetterstein range, arguably a better vantage point for photographing the massif than most spots directly on it.
Planning a day here instead of the summit
If the Zugspitze forecast looks poor on a given day, Garmisch-Classic and the Wank are the natural backup plan — both sit lower in the valley and are less exposed to the summit-level cloud that can ruin a cable car or cogwheel train day. In winter, Garmisch-Classic's 700–2,050 m altitude range means it holds a longer reliable ski season than the exposed summit terrain; in summer, the Wank's easy trails are a good half-day if you want scenery without the Reintal's commitment.
