About Grat & Firn
The gap this site is trying to fill
Search for "Zugspitze cable car" and you get an operator's own marketing page, or a forum thread arguing about which ascent is "better" with no actual comparison. Grat & Firn exists to lay out the real trade-offs between the three ways up the mountain — cable car, cogwheel train, and the Reintal hike on foot — side by side, with real numbers, so the choice is an informed one rather than whichever option a search result happened to promote.
How this was put together
Every factual claim on this site — elevation figures, distances, opening hours, historical dates — was checked against current sources (official operator pages, Alpenverein hut listings, and reputable travel references) rather than written from general impression. Where a detail is genuinely time-sensitive (prices, exact seasonal hours, specific trail closures), we've said so directly and pointed you to the operator's own current listing rather than guessing a number that will go stale.
What this site deliberately does and doesn't cover
This is a planning guide focused specifically on the Zugspitze massif and the immediate Garmisch-Partenkirchen valley — the three ascents, the Eibsee, the Partnachklamm, the Alpenverein hut network, and Garmisch-Classic/the Wank. It does not attempt to be a general Bavaria or Munich guide, and it doesn't cover restaurant reviews, hotel bookings, or detailed gear reviews — there are dedicated resources for those that do it better than a bolt-on section here would.
Independence
Grat & Firn is an independent, unofficial guide. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Bayerische Zugspitzbahn, Tiroler Zugspitzbahn, the Deutscher Alpenverein, the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, or any hut, lift, or attraction named on this site. Always confirm current prices, timetables, and conditions directly with the relevant operator before you travel — this site is a planning aid, not a booking system or a substitute for official, current information.
